Hardanger Embroidery

A Little History

Hardanger embroidery, or hardangersøm, is a traditional form of decorative Norwegian needlework. It originated in the Hardanger region of western Norway several centuries ago and is known for its distinctive openwork style.

What sets hardangersøm apart is its wide variety of stitches and techniques. While this range makes it a challenging craft to master, it also allows artisans to create an endless array of intricate and evolving designs. This balance of tradition and creativity has helped sustain its appeal for over 300 years.

Over time, Hardanger embroidery spread beyond its regional roots and was embraced by craftspeople across Norway and around the world. Scandinavian immigrants later brought the tradition to North America, where it continues to grow in popularity today.
