Norwegian Cooking

Experience the flavors of Norway through hands-on cooking workshops hosted by Sons of Norway. From soft, delicate lefse to classic open-faced sandwiches, these sessions offer a welcoming way to learn traditional recipes and techniques. Workshops are organized based on member interest and skill level, making them accessible for both beginners and experienced cooks.

Solglyt Lodge also periodically sponsors special workshops focused on preparing one or more traditional Norwegian dishes, providing opportunities to deepen your culinary skills while connecting with others who share an interest in Norwegian culture.

Norwegian cuisine is deeply shaped by the country’s landscape and history. With rugged mountains, steep fjords, and limited arable land, only a small portion of Norway is suitable for farming. Historically, most farms were small and focused on subsistence. Between the 1500s and 1800s, the population lived close to the limits of what agriculture could support. As a result, Norwegians relied heavily on fishing, hunting, and gathering—and developed creative, time-tested methods for preserving and storing food.
